University of Alabama Bryant Denny Stadium Renovation & Addition
This most recent renovation and expansion project for The University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium included updates to seating, concession areas, concourses, skyboxes, locker room, and tunnel, as well as the addition of 3,826 new premium seats. Prior stadium projects have included stadium expansions for the North and South endzones.
CHALLENGE
The stadium's overhaul was bound by a stringent timeline, scheduled between the end of the 2019 football season and the commencement of the 2020 season. The already ambitious schedule was further complicated by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which posed unprecedented challenges in managing construction timelines and worker safety.
SOLUTION
To manage the tight schedule effectively, TTL collaborated closely with the construction contractor to implement strategies such as employee staggering and after-hours or weekend work to maintain safety while adhering to the project deadlines. Aggressive scheduling and oversight were essential, with adjustments made to accommodate staff rotations, minimize COVID-19 exposure, and manage temporary shutdowns due to outbreaks.
Throughout these challenges, TTL carried out a geotechnical investigation, monitored deep foundation installation, conducted construction materials engineering and testing on soils, oversaw concrete placement, and performed Special Inspections on a variety of structural elements. Flexibility in scheduling was key and allowed the TTL team to navigate the various constraints imposed by the pandemic.
The renovation work encompassed a broad scope of enhancements, including the introduction of loge boxes, the creation of new skyboxes on the east U1 level and west side Founders Suites, comprehensive renovation of existing skyboxes, relocation of the press box, and expansion of concourses. These improvements aimed to facilitate better traffic flow and enhance the game-day experience for fans.
Through diligent planning, flexible scheduling, and robust project management, TTL successfully navigated the tight timelines and unexpected challenges presented by the pandemic to allow for the timely and safe completion of the stadium's enhancements.
